The basic principle of every ice hockey match is revealed at first glance. Similar to football, two teams fight for goals. The winner is the player who scored the most goals in the end. The game is played on an ice surface that is 200 feet (60.96m) long and 85 feet (25.91m) wide in the NHL. The goal of the attack is to get the puck (a hard rubber disc of about 150 grams) into the opponent's goal with the racket. The goals are relatively small compared to other sports with a height of 1.22 meters and a width of 1.83 meters. The playing time of 60 minutes is divided into three thirds of 20 minutes each. In the event of a draw, the game goes into extra time and then into penalty shooting.

NHL teams usually consist of up to 22 players. During the match, a maximum of six players, the goalkeeper and five field players may be on the ice simultaneously. In exceptional situations, the goalkeeper may be replaced by an additional field player.

A special feature of ice hockey, which also plays a role in betting on the NHL, is the tactical line-up. The game is usually played in lines or rows. This means that the attacker (striker) and defender ideally always play with the same partners. The classic team strength of 22 men in the NHL is usually distributed as follows:
